For most of chilly, rainy afternoon, it looked like the
men's soccer team was going to complete a doubleheader sweep
of Roberts Wesleyan, but a late goal contributed to a 3-2 setback
on Friday.
Sean Geoghegan (Klidare, Ireland/Naas City)was the first goalie
tested in the game as he was forced to make a save on a shot by
Johnny Lobene in the 18th minute.
He wasn't as fortunate in the 32nd minute when
Alex Harling juked the Knights' defender and beat Geoghegan
to the near post, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.
Queens responded with the equalizer nearly five minutes later
when substitute, Alex Schweitzer (Bayside, N.Y./Holy Cross) beat
the man guarding him and flicked the ball past the Roberts Wesleyan
goalie to even the score at 1-1.
The Redhawks would take their second lead of the game in the
second half of play when Michael Cunningham was in transition and
outran the Knights' defenders and beat the goalie for the
marker, and a 2-1 Roberts Wesleyan edge.
But, once again, Queens College showed some moxie and heart, as
they responded with the game-tying goal for the second time on the
afternoon. In the 86th minute, a Roberts Wesleyan
player pulled down a Knights' forward in the box, causing the
referee to blow the whistle for a penalty shot.
On the ensuing penalty, Danny Stoker (London, England/RSSKL)
calmy drilled the ball to his left and past the diving goalie,
bring the score to 2-2.
However, it wasn't meant to be that day for Queens
College, as the Redhawks scored the game winning goal in the
89th minute of play when Jake Zito, who was in the right
side of the Knights' box, flicked the ball over to Matthew
Hohler at the top of the goalie box, and he beat Geoghegan
for the score, giving the Redhawks the 3-2 win.
The Queens College men's soccer team returns to action on
Thursday, October 18, when they host Caldwell College at 3:30 PM
from Knights Field.
