FLUSHING, N.Y. – American International College's Thomas Denomme knocked home the only goal of the match in the 67th minute Thursday afternoon, as the host Queens College men's soccer team was victimized by two hit posts and had a potential goal cleared off the line, in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Yellow Jackets.
The result was a tough one for the Knights (1-2), who outshot AIC (1-1-1) by a 17-10 count on the afternoon – including a decisive 9-4 edge in the opening half of play. Just shy of the quarter-hour mark in the first stanza, QC had two dangerous chances come up short. In the 12th minute, it was junior Peter Touros (Bellerose, N.Y. – game-high-tying five shots) who had his 10-yard blast cleared off the line by the Yellow Jackets defense. Less than one minute later, his classmate, Danny Stoker (London, England – five shots) sent a 28-yard free kick off the top of the crossbar – keeping the match scoreless.
American International broke through in the 67th minute, when Drou Goff sent a left-side cross to the far post. Denomme was there to put in his first goal of the year from inside the six-yard box, providing all the scoring that the Yellow Jackets wound up needing on the afternoon.
Queens did not go quietly, however, as senior Dele Akinyode (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found himself 1v1 with AIC keeper Richard Lynham (three saves in his opening match of the season) at the corner of the six-yard box in the 80th minute of play. But Akinyode's strike was an unlucky one, hitting off the near post and rolling out of bounds.
Senior keeper Demetrios Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.) made two saves in net for QC, who is back in home action Saturday afternoon (Sept. 10), when head coach Carl Christian's side welcomes Stonehill College to Flushing for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
