RINDGE, N.H. – Junior Janine Guerra (Whitestone, N.Y.) sent home an equalizing goal in the 80th minute Saturday afternoon at Sodexo Field, but it was not enough for the Queens College women's soccer team, as its attempt to garner its first result of the 2011 campaign fell just over four minutes short when host No. 18 Franklin Pierce scored a 2-1, double-overtime decision in the 106th minute of play.
The visiting Knights (0-2) fell behind 1-0 17 minutes into the second half, when the Ravens' (2-0) Tori Gikas headed home a feed from Courtney Steeves to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
That lead lasted for 18 minutes, as Guerra collected a pass from junior Brittany Wooster (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and beat FPU keeper Jocelyn Leon (two saves) from the penalty spot, knotting the game at 1-all in the process.
Neither team got a shot off in the first 10-minute overtime period, though Franklin Pierce's first shot of the second extra-time session was all it needed, when Amanda Panaro collected the ball off a turnover outside the penalty area and bested QC junior keeper Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.; four saves) with 4:26 to go.
FPU held an 11-8 advantage in shots, though Queens outshot the hosts by a 6-2 count in the first half – including junior Brittany Silipo's (Bay Shore, N.Y.) 39th-minute header off a corner kick that rang off the crossbar.
Head coach Carl Christian's QC squad is back in action Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 6), when the Knights open their home slate with a 4 p.m. kickoff against Nyack College.
