Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Southern Connecticut

Box Score

RINDGE, N.H. - The Queens College women's soccer team failed to beat Southern Connecticut State University keeper Jacquelyn Fede, as the Knights fell to the Owls by a 2-0 count in a game played at Franklin Pierce University. Both goals against QC came in the final four-plus minutes of the first half.

Southern Connecticut (1-0) held a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half, and scored in the 41st minute when Flavia Bernardes found the lower-left corner of the net from inside the penalty area. The Owls' lead was doubled with 1:21 remaining in the half, when Suzane Pires created a turnover at midfield and streaked down the left channel before placing the ball in the upper-right corner.

The teams both put five shots apiece on the opposition in the second half, including three shots on goal by Queens (0-1). However, Fede (four saves) and the SCSU defense were equal to the task in preserving its lead.

Senior Andrea Slavin (Floral Park, N.Y.) and junior Brittany Silipo (Bay Shore, N.Y.) both fired two shots for QC, while senior Katherine Colon (W. Babylon, N.Y.) and junior Brittany Wooster (Lynbrook, N.Y.) each placed one shot on net. Junior keeper Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.) turned aside one shot in the Knights' net.

Head coach Carl Christian's side is back in action at the Franklin Pierce Classic Saturday, when the Knights play the host Ravens, ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA Preseason Division II poll, in a 12 noon kickoff.
