Box Score
POMONA, N.Y. – Junior Lorena Russi provided all the offense the Queens College women's soccer team would need just two minutes into the second half Saturday afternoon, and later converted a penalty kick to lift the Knights (2-2, 1-0 ECC) to a 3-0 triumph in their East Coast Conference opener at St. Thomas Aquinas (1-5, 0-2 ECC).
Russi (Rego Park, N.Y.) took the ball off a Spartans turnover 1:50 into the second half, and beat STAC keeper Julia Karl (six saves) to push QC in front for good, 1-0.
In the 68th minute, the Knights were fouled in the penalty area, providing the opportunity for Russi to step up and convert the spot kick, netting her second goal both of the game and the season, and doubling the visitors' advantage.
Finally in the 71st minute of play, junior Brittany Silipo (Bay Shore, N.Y.) drove down the field and beat Karl to account for the final score.
On the afternoon, Queens dominated with a 21-7 shots advantage, and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Allison Breakey (Frankfort, Ill.) made two of her three saves in the second half to register the Knights' second-consecutive clean sheet.
Head coach Carl Christian's Knights are back in action next Saturday (Sept. 24), when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., for a 12 noon ECC clash at Mercy College.
