BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Queens College men's soccer team fell victim to sixth-ranked and top-seeded C.W. Post in the semifinals of the East Coast Conference Championships Wednesday afternoon, as the host Pioneers had a 37th-minute goal stand up to knock out the fourth-seeded Knights, 1-0.
QC (7-8-3) outshot the Pioneers by a 16-14 count on the afternoon, including a 14-6 edge in the second half of play as it searched for the equalizer. C.W. Post (16-1-1) got a goal from Cemil Turan off a turnover late in the first half, and from that point on the Knights valiantly chased after an equalizing tally.
In the 65th minute of action, Queens put three shots in a row towards goal. Sophomore Tyler Iocco (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) had a pair of shots blocked within seconds of each other, followed by another effort towards goal by junior Peter Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.).
The Knights again pressured off a corner kick in the 80th minute, with sophomore Scott Lamont (Edinburgh, Scotland) having his first effort cleared off the line and a second attempt saved by CWP's Marco Jorgensen (five saves on the afternoon).
Queens's last effort came in the 88th minute of action, when sophomore Metri Abdul-Karim (Oceanside, N.Y.) had a shot in the right channel stopped by Jorgensen. Junior Danny Stoker (London, England) then shot towards the lower right corner off the rebound, only to see his effort hit the post in unfortunate fashion.
Senior Demetrios Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.) made four saves in the Knights cage, helping the visitors to stave off nine corner kicks by the Pioneers, as well, in his collegiate finale.
