Men's Soccer Ties Bridgeport, 1-1, Qualifies for ECC Championships

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Junior center back Danny Stoker pushed forward and struck an equalizing free kick from 20 yards away in the 76th minute of play Sunday night at Knights Field, as the Queens College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie in its regular-season finale at the University of Bridgeport.

With the tie, QC (7-7-4, 3-2-2 ECC) earned qualification into the four-team East Coast Conference Championships for the third time in four seasons. Head coach Carl Christian's Knights will be the No. 4 seed, and travel to top-seeded and ninth-ranked C.W. Post for a semifinal contest, Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.

Bridgeport (9-6-1, 4-2-1 ECC), which will play a semifinal contest Wednesday against NYIT at a site to be determined, got on the board first off a set piece in the 34th minute of action. Lee Middleton one-timed a pass from teammate Andreas Blanke from 15 yards away, beating Queens senior keeper, Demetrios Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.) and giving the host institution a 1-0 lead.

Knowing it needed a positive result to control its own playoff destiny, Queens pushed for the equalizer in the second half and got the break it needed in the 76th minute when a Purple Knights foul was committed just outside the penalty area. Stoker bent the ball around the UB wall and into the lower-right corner of the net, beating Danny Hernandez and tying the game at 1-all on his 13th goal of the season.

Bridgeport held a 19-7 edge in shots on the night, as well as an 8-2 margin in corner kicks.

As the game was originally scheduled to be a home match Saturday (Oct. 29) for Queens, prior to the match Christian's side paid tribute to eight players in a Senior Day ceremony: Dele Akinyode (Brooklyn, N.Y.); Santiago Bedoya (E. Elmhurst, N.Y.); Austin Bennett (Keystone, Fla.); Juan Cano (Valley Stream, N.Y.); Omar Ezat (New Hyde Park, N.Y.); Daniel Ospina (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.); Demetrios Touros and Kevin Vasquez (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.).
