FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior striker Andrea Slavin netted her ninth goal in the 46th minute of the match Saturday afternoon, but the host Queens College women's soccer team fell victim to a pair of hit crossbars later on in the second half, dropping a 2-1, East Coast Conference match to C.W. Post as a result.
The visiting Pioneers (8-4-1, 4-2 ECC) broke the scoreless deadlock in the 36th minute of play, when Alexa Niciforo scored her seventh goal of the season off a left-side cross from Heidi Eikeland. Tove Eriksson sent Eikeland down the left flank to help set up the tally.
C.W. Post, which held an 8-2 edge in shots in the opening 45-minute stanza, doubled its lead four minutes later, when Lina Harle received a tap pass from Niciforo and chipped one home from 12 yards away to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Slavin's (Floral Park, N.Y.) tally came off a perfectly-placed free kick from the top-right of the penalty area from sophomore Christina Porco (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.), who bent the ball to roughly 15 yards away from goal – where Slavin sent the ball to the top-middle of the net to pull the Knights (7-6-1, 3-2-1 ECC) to within a 2-1 count.
Queens, who outshot the Pioneers by a 9-3 count in the second half, continued to push for the equalizer. But in the 61st and 66th minute, respectively, junior Brittany Silipo (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and classmate Lorena Russi (Rego Park, N.Y.) placed shots off the crossbar – providing QC's best chances to knot the game up.
Head coach Carl Christian's Knights wrap up regular season play next Saturday (Oct. 29) in Flushing, when they welcome top-ranked Bridgeport for an 11:30 a.m. ECC contest on Senior Day.
