FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Kevin Vasquez put the Queens College men's soccer team up by a 1-0 count in the 35th minute of play on Saturday afternoon, but fifth-ranked C.W. Post scored three unanswered tallies in the second half en route to knocking off the host Knights, 3-1, in an East Coast Conference match.
Playing a man down, Queens (6-7-1, 3-2-1 ECC), Vasquez (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) collected a feed across the box from junior forward Peter Touros (Bellerose, N.Y.), and one-touched the ball past C.W. Post (13-1-1, 5-0-1 ECC) keeper Marco Jorgensen to give the home side a 1-0 edge.
QC held a pair of breakaway opportunities early in the second half, as sophomore Metri Abdul-Karim (Oceanside, N.Y.) and Peter Touros both went one-on-one with Jorgensen in the 52nd and 62nd minutes, respectively. Jorgensen was equal to the task, and kept his team in the match.
In the 67th minute, the Pioneers' Cemil Turan headed home a right-side cross from Andreas Olson to knot the score at 1-1.
Eight minutes later, Olson netted a 12-yard strike off a failed QC clear to push C.W. Post in front for good. Eivind Austboe added an insurance goal from 35 yards out in the 88th minute to wrap up the contest.
Head coach Carl Christian's Knights now find themselves essentially in a must-win situation next Saturday (Oct. 29), as QC controls its own destiny in an attempt to make the four-team, East Coast Conference Championships, heading into a 2 p.m. kickoff on Senior Day versus the University of Bridgeport.
