Assumption strikes twice in the second half to down QC, 2-0

Dom Mondi scored two goals in a span of 4:35 in the second half to give Assumption College a 2-0 victory over Queens College in the Knights 2010 home opener on Sunday afternoon.

Danny Stoker had a golden opportunity to give QC a lead just 3:08 in but his breakaway shot was kicked aside by Assumption goalkeeper Brandan Sullivan. That was but one of the Knights nine first half shots but despite their edge in play the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes.

It took only 5:49 of play for Mondi to put Assumption on top 1-0. Mondi came away with the ball after a scrum in the top left side of the box and put his shot behind Demetrios Tourous of QC to break the stalemate. Four minutes and 35 seconds later, Mike Wieczorek attempted to play the ball back to keeper Tourous but Mondi picked off the pass and found a wide open net for his second goal of the half.

QC attempted to mount a rally and had three opportunities to score in rapid succession in the 81st minute. First, Christos Koulaklis had the ball go between his legs in the box with a wide open net in front of him. Moments later, Koulaklis hit the crossbar from inside the box and Danny Stoker put the carom over the net.

Tourous made five stops and Stoker attempted a team high six shots for the Knights, who dropped to 0-2 on the season.
