Lorena Russi's first goal as a QC Knight came at the most
opportune time for her team. Russi scored 7:30 into overtime to
give Queens College a 2-1 victory on the road at the University of
Bridgeport on Saturday evening in the 2010 conference opener for
each side.
Riding the strong defensive play of Christina Porco and goalkeeper
Allison Breakey, QC held the defending ECC Champion and nationally
ranked Purple Knights of UB to a scoreless deadlock until QC took a
1-0 lead on an own goal at the 78:05 mark. The Knights were 2:19
away from victory but Katie Stanley came through for Bridgeport,
beating Allison Breakey (seven saves) on a penalty kick to knot the
game at one and send it into extra time.
UB took the first three shots of the overtime session but it was
the fourth shot at 7:30 that proved to be the charm. Russi, a
sophomore that spent her high school days on the campus of Queens
College at Townsend Harris, ripped a shot from long range past
Julia Hansson and into the top corner of the cage to send QC home
winners.
In summary, Knights' Head Coach Carl Christian described the game
as a "great contest with lots of chances at both ends. It was a
great team display with excellent performances all over the pitch.
Standouts on defense were Breakey and Porco (rookie sweeper) and on
offense Cuartas & Russi, who created one goal and scored the
game-winner in OT."
