The Knights made Laura D'Amore's first half goal stand up
in a 1-0 victory over conference rival Mercy College in Flushing on
a crisp Saturday afternoon. D'Amore now has a goal in each of the
last two games.
QC shook off some early game doldrums to break out on top in the
latter part of the first half when Dena Zornberg was fouled
just outside the box. That set up a free kick for Kirri
Bolton, whose attempt deflected off of the hands of Mercy
goalkeeper Stephanie DiLegge and the cross bar before D'Amore found
the net with the rebound to give the Knights a 1-0 lead with 5:16
to go in the half. The goal was D'Amore's second of the season,
with both goals coming in the two games played this week.
Mercy had two good opportunities to tie the score, both coming
in the final 45 minutes. In the 62nd minute, Reid Coffey sent a
pass from right in front of the Mavericks bench to Shelby Martino
in close but the Knights dodged a bullet when Martino failed to get
a shot off. Ten minutes later, Allison Breakey came out to the top
of the box to meet Jamie Sabel and stuff her shot
attempt.
With the win, QC moves to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in ECC play. Mercy
College drops to 2-5 and 0-3.
