ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2018) - Despite pushing the second set into a win-by-two scenario on Wednesday (Sept. 12), the Queens College volleyball team fell in its East Coast Conference opener to Molloy at Quealy Gymnasium in Rockville Centre. The reigning conference champions claimed a 25-12, 26-24, 25-13 victory over the Knights, dropping Queens to 0-8 on the season and 0-1 in ECC play.
Dee-Ana Mitchell and Lauren Kehoe led the Knights with six kills apiece as Briana Green added five kills in the middle for QC. Alisha Matthews dished out 11 assists and Vanessa Juengerkes pitched in with six assists. Mitchell posted a team-high 15 digs, with Gina Giacalone adding 11 digs as Leeks Hollis contributed seven digs.
After the opening set went quickly in favor of the Lions, Queens stormed out to a 9-6 edge in the second set as Mitchell laid down a kill after combining with Green to block Hailey Wehr on an attack. Molloy then scored the next 13 points; after an attack error, Meaghan Carr went on a 12-point run with a service error ending her run at 18-10. In the stretch, Kacey Affrunti notched three kills and Carr posted three service aces to go along with several additional attack errors. After a kill by Jessica Fischetti brought Molloy to the 20-point plateau, Affrunti's service error opened the door for QC to come back and tie the set at 21-all on a kill from Kehoe. The Lions re-took the lead and had set point at 24-22 before an attack error from Affrunti and a kill by Green leveled the set at 24-all and triggered a win-by-two scenario. Unfortunately for Queens, Wehr scored on a kill and a ball-handling error gave the set to Molloy and the Lions would go on to comfortably out-pace the Knights in the third frame.
Queens will head to Albany on Saturday (Sept. 15) for a 1 p.m. contest at Saint Rose.
