Knights Show Valiant Effort, But Fall Short to Mavericks

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Despite showing grit, an injury-ridden Queens College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 East Coast Conference (ECC) match against the Mavericks of Mercy College Wednesday evening. The Knights were unable to close out each set, falling, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22, inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium

With the loss, the Knights moved to 5-15 overall (2-9 ECC), while the Mavericks improved to 7-21 overall, and 1-11 in conference play.

The Knights were led by sophomore Anita Sengara's 11 kills and seven digs, while senior Kristen Moore paced the Knights with 24 assists and two service aces. Meanwhile, junior Kiara Reyes posted career highs with 12 digs and two aces.

In the first set, Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Mavericks tallied three straight points. The first set stayed within two points through, as both teams fought back and forth. After a Queens error put Mercy up 23-21 to force a Knights timeout, Queens was unable to take advantage of the timeout, as a Courtney Gebhardt kill earned the Mavericks a 1-0 set lead.

The Knights jumped out a quick 5-1 lead in the second set before the Mavericks fought back to bring it to one, 5-4. However, the Knights unfazed, worked up another 4-0 run behind Sengara's two kills to take a 9-4 lead. But errors by the Knights brought the Mavericks back in the game, as a kill by Sa'Naya Johnson knotted the second set at 14-14. The two teams traded points back and forth before another kill by Johnson and an error earned the Mavericks a 25-23 win and a 2-0 set advantage.

Mercy came out firing in the third set, looking to close the match out, took a 5-0 lead. But the Knights showed fight despite facing a 16-7 deficit. Queens rallied on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down to 16-14. However, the deficit was too much overcome, as an injury-ridden Knights team dropped the third set, 25-22.

UP NEXT: The Knights close out the road trip phase of their season schedule, as they travel to Bridgeport, on Thursday, Nov. 2, with a date against the Purple Knights of University of Bridgeport (11-13 overall, 7-3 ECC) with first serve set for 7 p.m. in ECC action. The Knights fell, 3-0, back on Oct. 4, in Fitzgerald Gym.
