FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College volleyball team claimed its first East Coast Conference victory of the season Tuesday evening with a three set win over Mercy. Set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 25-21.
The Knights registered a .175 hitting percentage, compared to the Mavericks' .081 clip. Freshman Cassidy Stewart led the Knights with 11 kills, and hit at a .308 clip. Sophomore Nicoletta DiCocco tallied 11 digs and nine kills in the contest, while junior Kristen Moore had 13 digs and 35 assists. Senior Ragina Anthony led QC with 20 digs.
In the opening set, Mercy grabbed an early 5-1 win before a 7-3 surge evened the contest at eight. The Knights kept the momentum, scoring six of the next seven points to take a 14-9 lead. Trailing 18-12, Mercy chipped away at the deficit before trimming it to one, 21-20. From there QC put the set away with the four more points.
In the second set, Mercy held a 4-1 lead before once against QC evened the match at eight apiece. With Mercy ahead 16-12, QC fought back and evened the set at 22 before a kill by DiCocco wrapped it up for the home team.
In set three, the Knights jumped out to a 5-1 advantage, before Mercy countered to grab a 10-9 lead. From there, QC went on a 4-1 run to take a 13-11, and never trailed the rest of the way. Knotted at 20, the Knights tallied five of the match's last six points and put the game away on an ace by Anthony.
