FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 13, 2018) - Queens College and Adelphi University will co-host the annual ITA East Regional Championships beginning Friday (Sept. 14) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, with the tournament sponsored by Fare Buzz.
More than 250 athletes from 25 different schools within the East region---that includes New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Washington DC, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Connecticut---will compete for a regional bragging rights as well as further tennis glory. The singles and doubles champion(s) from this regional event will earn an automatic berth to the 2018 ITA Cup, which is scheduled for Oct. 10-14, 2018. This year, each divisional singles winner along with the Oracle Cup Doubles Champion will receive wildcards into the Division I ITA Fall National Championships to take place in Surprise, Ariz. from Nov. 7-11.
The tournament will follow the new collegiate tennis rules. No-ad scoring for both men and women and no lets on the serves for men's matches. Qualifying singles and main draw doubles matches will be 8-game pro sets while main draw singles will be best two out of three sets with a match tiebreak in lieu of the third set.
Matches will begin on Friday (Sept. 14) at 2:30 with qualifying rounds. 32 players from both the men's and women's draws will advance to the main draw which will begin on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 8 a.m. Doubles play will being late Friday night under the lights and the tournament concludes Monday afternoon.
The public is invited to attend this tournament at the prestigious grounds where just last week, Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic claimed singles championships at the U.S. Open. Fans can come watch amazing collegiate tennis for a one-time $5 fee.
Top seeds in the women's singles draw include two nationally ranked players Diana Baumgartnere of NYIT and Luisa Auffarth of Queens College. On the men's side, top seeds feature Tiago Fernandez of Southern New Hampshire and Eymeric Chevalier of Concordia College. Women's top doubles seeds are headlined by Goldey Beacom's Catarina Zheng and Lotte Lesscher Y Post while the men's top seeds are Concordia's Chevalier and Michele Fenoaltea.
