FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2018) - Laura Ortega Jover's win in singles play clinched a victory for the Queens College women's tennis team as the Knights opened the 2018 fall campaign with a 5-2 victory over District of Columbia in an East Coast Conference match on Saturday (Sept. 8) at the Queens College Tennis Center.
Queens (1-0) trailed 1-0 after doubles play---with the new one-point format for NCAA Division II doubles instituted coming into this season, whereas last year's rules set each of three doubles matches as one point each. The Firebirds (1-1) won at both first and second doubles with Ortega Jover and Araceli Bel Aleixendri winnning a 6-4 third-doubles match against Anastasia Khomyachenko and Estefania Castrillon.
In singles, the Knights nearly swept all six flights with UDC's win coming at the top singles match-up as Simone Parn defeated Reehan Rashad in three sets. Ruth Artaza Martin and Louisa Brunetti won straight-set matches at sixth- and fourth-singles, respectively with Marisa Ostoja claiming a straight-set win at the third flight. Ortega Jover won the match with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 triumph against Anastasiia Danylova at fifth-singles and Luisa Auffarth battled back to defeat Marija Milic at second singles (4-6, 6-4, 7-5).
The Knights take on Post University on Sunday (Sept. 9) at 1 p.m. at the Queens College Tennis Center.
