FLUSHING, N.Y. – The rematch is set. The Queens College women's tennis team swept St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC), 5-0, in the East Coast Conference (ECC) semifinals from the QC Tennis Courts on Friday to set up a rematch with rival NYIT in Saturday's conference finals.
Queens remains undefeated on the season, and with the win, the ECC Regular Season Champion Knights improve to 10-0 overall, while STAC drops to 7-9.
The Knights and Bears will square off in the ECC title match for the sixth consecutive season. Queens will look to end NYIT's string of five straight conference titles.
Queens quickly set the tone early in Friday's semifinal, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Then wins at first and fifth singles sealed the sweep for the Knights.
Sophomores Ruth Artaza Martin and Araceli Bel Aleixendri were the first victors of the day, earning an 8-3 win at third doubles to move to 6-0 in dual match play. Juniors Reehan Rashad and Laura Ortega Jover then captured an 8-4 win at top doubles, while sophomore Louisa Brunetti and senior Emy Alplund recorded an 8-2 victory in the second spot.
In singles, Rashad continued her impressive campaign with a near-sweep of 6-0, 6-1 at the top flight, improving to 11-2 overall on the season. Artaza Martin then closed it out with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5, as she moved to 8-1 in dual matches.
Queens and NYIT will battle for the ECC crown at noon on Saturday, Oct. 28, from the QC Tennis Courts. The Knights defeated the Bears, 7-1, on the road just nine days ago.
