FLUSHING, N.Y. – For the second day in a row, the Queens College women's tennis team swept an East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent, this time rolling past Daemen College, 9-0, from the QC Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Knights move to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ECC, with all three wins coming at home. Meanwhile, Daemen falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
After sweeping Roberts Wesleyan in their ECC opener on Friday, it was the same story, different day for the Knights. Queens completely controlled doubles play to take a 3-0 lead and then posted six straight-set wins in singles for the second consecutive match as well.
Juniors Reehan Rashad and Laura Ortega Jover continued their dominance at No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 victory. Senior Emy Alplund and sophomore Louisa Brunetti also remained red-hot, taking an 8-2 decision at second doubles. Finally, sophomores Ruth Artaza Martin and Araceli Bel Aleixendri teamed up for the first time this year and swept their way to an 8-0 win in the third spot.
Rashad and Ortega Jover moved to 3-0 on the season as the Knights' top doubles team, while Alplund and Brunetti also improved to 3-0 at second doubles.
In singles, Rashad did what she does best, winning a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the top flight. Brunetti added a 6-2, 6-3 win at second singles, while Ortega Jover fought for a 6-4, 6-3 win in the third position. Alplund made easy work at fourth singles, capturing a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Artaza Martin notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5, while junior Line Sorsdahl Aasen cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the sixth spot.
Rashad, Brunetti, Ortega Jover and Alplund have each put together 3-0 records at their respective singles positions as well, each putting up combined marks of 6-0 apiece thus far in singles and doubles play through three matches.
The Knights will hit the road for the first time this season on Friday, Sept. 15, when they visit ECC foe District of Columbia, which defeated defending ECC Champion NYIT on Friday.
