Queens Takes Down Adelphi for Third Consecutive Victory

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory on Friday afternoon, 7-2, over Adelphi University at the QC Tennis Center. The Knights, who are 3-0 so far this spring, improve to 12-2 on the season, while handing the Panthers (12-5) their first loss since September.

It was a big regional win for the Knights, who were ranked second in the NCAA East Regional Rankings on Wednesday, as the Panthers were ranked fourth. Queens captured two of the three doubles points before taking five of the six singles matches. The only doubles loss came in a tiebreaker, and the lone singles defeat came in three sets.

Laura Ortega Jover and Reehan Rashad improved to 3-0 at No. 2 doubles this spring with an 8-6 victory over Elizabeth Kallenberg and Samantha Perri, who entered the match with a 9-1 record as a doubles team. Adelphi took No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker, and Queens was awarded the third doubles point by default, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Rashad moved to 3-0 at No. 1 singles this spring with a big three-set 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 win over Rebecca Fakas, who entered the contest with a 14-1 overall record. Ortega Jover added a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Angelika Sobiecka scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the third position. Ruth Artaza Martin captured a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5, and Queens was handed No. 6 singles by default. The Panthers won in three sets at No. 4, but the Knights had already done their damage.

Next up for Queens will be a trip to Goldey-Beacom College for a big non-conference match with the Lightning, who are ranked third in the NCAA East Regional Rankings, on Monday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m.
