Women’s Tennis Opens Spring with Win over Wagner

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing in its first match of the spring season, the Queens College women's tennis team downed Division I Wagner College at home on Friday, 6-1. With the win, the Knights improved to 10-2 overall and 5-1 at home, while the Seahawks dropped to 7-5.

Reehan Rashad picked up wins in singles and doubles in her debut for Queens, as did teammates Laura Ortega Jover and Angelika Sobiecka.

The Knights took the doubles point by earning victories at the first and second flights. Sobiecka and Emy Alplund combined for an 8-2 victory at top doubles, while Rashad and Ortega Jover teamed up for the first time to snag an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Rashad was impressive in her No. 1 singles match, taking a 6-0, 7-5 decision to lead the charge. Ortega Jover also made easy work at No. 2 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win. Meanwhile, Sobiecka rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the third slot. Ruth Artaza Martin took fifth singles, 6-3, 6-4, and Araceli Bel Aleixendri also notched a 6-3, 6-4 win in the sixth spot.

Queens, ranked second in the region and No. 44 in the nation, will visit Goldey-Beacom College next for a 1 p.m. match on Friday, March 31.
