SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Queens College women's tennis team triumphed over St. Thomas Aquinas with a score of 9-0 in East Coast Conference action. The Knights remain unbeaten against the Spartans dating back to the 2006 season.
In singles action sophomore Laura Ortega Jover played in the 1st spot and picked up her second win of the year by defeating the Spartans' All-Conference honoree in Bianca Signore 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Ruth Arteza Martin played in the 2nd singles and defeated #2 foe Nyenyeri Kanefu 6-2, 6-4, picking up her first victory on the young season. Team captain Angelika Sobiecka clinched her victory in 3rd singles with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Katarina Lopez. In the 4th singles match, junior Emy Alplund defeated Sara O'Brien 6-0, 6-1. In 5th singles, Line Sorsdahl Aasen picked up the win over Raven DeLeon 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Araceli Bel was not far behind classmate Martin as she picked up her first of the season playing in 6th singles with an impressive shutout (6-0, 6-0) over Carolyn Kopf.
In doubles action, the pair of Sobiecka and Alplund defeated Signore/O'Brien 8-3. Jover and Bel defeated the pair of Kanefu and Lopez 8-5. Aasen and Kolesnichenko swept the match for the Knights with a win over DeLeon and Kopf 8-1.
