Women’s Soccer Honors Seniors, Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Goldey-Beacom

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College women's soccer team recognized its nine seniors on Friday afternoon, but the Knights dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Goldey-Beacom College in overtime on Senior Day from the QC Soccer Field. 

Prior to the game, Queens honored seniors Erin Vernillo, Courtney Locurcio, Haley Gibbons, Taylor Bonanno, Nicole Cranny, Antoinette Koskinas, Alexis Qualle, Vaso Platis, and Christina Gogh

The Knights' record now stands at 4-10-2 overall after concluding their home schedule, while the Lightning improve to 11-4-2.

Vernillo took eight shots, all on goal, while freshman Sarafina Smith and sophomore Brooke Delano collectively combined to take four shots on goal. As a team, Queens took 16 shots, with 13 going on goal. Queens goalkeeper, Cranny, made five saves in net for the Knights.

Goldey-Beacom goalkeepers Alyssa Angilletta and Marta Lopez saved a combined 13 shots, while Cliona Crammond scored the game-winning goal for the Lightning.

Queens was effective on both the offensive and defensive end in the first half. As a team, the Knights took a combined eight shots and limited Goldey-Beacom to just two shots in the first half.

The Knights had two great opportunities to score in the first half, but junior Adriana Mendrinos' shot sailed high on an open net, and Vernillo's best look from the right side went right into the hands of Lopez.

The Lightning made a late push in the second half with three shots over the final 3:12, but Cranny made two saves, as the game went to overtime scoreless. In the extra frame, Goldey-Beacom drew a foul close to the goal, setting up a free kick for Crammond, who curved in her seventh goal of the season just out of Cranny's reach 4:53 into overtime.

The Knights will hit the road for their final matchup of the season, when they face off against Dominican College this Monday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m.
