Women’s Soccer Topped by No. 12 LIU Post

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Facing the challenging task of opposing the 12-ranked team in the nation, the Queens College women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to the LIU Post Pioneers in East Coast Conference (ECC) play from the QC Soccer Field on Wednesday.

The setback puts Queens at 2-8-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the ECC, while LIU Post continues its impressive season by improving to 10-1-1 (4-0 ECC).

The Knights kept pace with the Pioneers in the early going. Senior Erin Vernillo tried to set the tone in the opening minute, but her shot was denied by Pioneer goalie Hillevi Eklow. Fellow senior Nicole Cranny later made saves in the sixth and eighth minutes to keep the contest scoreless.

It wasn't until the 30th minute when LIU Post started the scoring, as Sarah McGary tapped in the game's first goal. From there, the Pioneers controlled the tempo, but the Knights still kept it at a one-goal difference. However, in the 44th minute, Alice Schonfeldt scored her sixth goal of the season on a free kick to give LIU Post a 2-0 lead entering halftime.

After outshooting Queens, 9-2, in the first half, LIU Post kept the pressure on in the second half, as the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Erin O'Connor in the 65th minute. The Knights were able to create opportunities down the stretch but couldn't find the back of the net. The Pioneers added to their total with a Veronica Saager goal in the 90th minute.

Cranny made six saves in net for the Knights, while senior Taylor Bonanno registered two shots. Eklow stopped three shots for the Pioneers to earn her fifth shutout of the season, and O'Connor led the way with three points on a goal and an assist. LIU Post held advantages in shots (18-7), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (6-1).

Queens will look to bounce back on Saturday, Oct. 14, when the Knights travel to Roberts Wesleyan College for a 1 p.m. ECC matchup.
