PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Erin Vernillo scored her first goal of the 2017 season, but it was not enough, as the Queens College women's soccer team fell on the road against Jefferson in non-conference action on Saturday, 2-1.
Vernillo led the way for Queens (0-2) with the Knights' lone goal and took nine shots, including three shots on goal. Junior Alma Mana'o recorded her first assist in a Knights uniform, while fellow classmate Meyah Romeo took two shots, including one shot on goal.
Both teams took 17 shots apiece, but the Rams put four more of their shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Cranny (0-2) made seven saves for Queens.
Dena Noiseux scored two unassisted goals for Jefferson (1-1), while Alexa Karakitslos took three shots, including two shots on goal. Jefferson's goalkeeper, Erin Tinneny, saved six shots in net.
Jefferson took a 1-0 lead as Noiseux scored off a rebound after a save at the 5:05 mark. Later in the half, Noiseux scored her second goal of the game at 20:43 on a free kick, and the Rams entered the break up by two.
The Knights aimed to bounce back in the second half, and just over 15 minutes in, they responded when Vernillo found the back of the net off a pass from Mana'o. However, Queens was unable to complete the comeback, as Jefferson held on for the 2-1 win.
Queens remains on the road, as the Knights will look to earn their first victory of the season on Monday, Sept. 4, against New Haven at 4 p.m.
