LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Junior Erin Vernillo scored her team leading fifth goal of the season in the Queens College women's soccer team's 2-1 overtime loss to Georgian Court. Trailing 1-0, the Lions scored the tying goal in the 53rd minute before netting the game-winner with two minutes remaining in the second overtime. With the loss, the Knights moved to 3-8-1, while the Lions improved 8-3-1.
Just minutes before halftime, sophomore Adriana Mendrinos assisted on Vernillo's goal as she fed her teammate off the right side to allow Vernillo to score through the top left of the net. Coming out of halftime, the Lions looked to level the game early on as they pushed aggressively. Amanda Astudillo's goal in the 53rd minute tied the game (1-1) as the ball tipped off junior goalie Nicole Cranny's raised hands.
The Lions looked for the win after typing the game but Cranny and the defense stayed stubborn as they faced countless shots while Georgian Court denied the Knights a shot in the second half.
Vernillo looked to hands the Knights a win in the first overtime but her shot sailed wide. After 108 minutes, the Knights were two minutes away from a draw, but Jessica Constantine captured the win for the Lions as her header found the spot for a 2-1 win. Georgian Court held the advantage in shots (31-5) and corner kicks (5-2). Cranny and classmate Megan Deak split time at goal, saving 14 shots between them.
UP NEXT: The Knights return to East Coast Conference action on Saturday Oct. 15 as they play host to Mercy College with showdown set for 12:00 pm.
