FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College women's soccer team captured its first East Coast Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas at QC Soccer Field. After a scoreless opening period, junior Haley Gibbons tallied the game's lone goal in the 48th minute.
The Knights peppered the net throughout, totaling 23 shots in the contest, while allowing just six shots by the visiting Spartans. QC held a distinct 12-4 edge in shots during the first half. Gibbons produced the Knights' best chance to break through in the opening stanza, when her shot nicked the cross bar in the 32nd minute.
Shortly into the second half, the Knights scored. After a shot by sophomore Adriana Mendrinos was stopped by St. Thomas Aquinas goalkeeper Courtney Dumain, Gibbons gathered the rebound and lofted a shot to the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.
Dumain made seven saves for the Spartans, while QC goalie Nicole Cranny made three saves to register the clean sheet. The Knights held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
