FLUSHING, N.Y. – Despite trailing by just one at halftime, the Queens College women's lacrosse team concluded its season on Saturday with a 14-6 defeat to East Coast Conference (ECC) foe St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) on Senior Day. The Knights honored seniors Alyssa Walker and Angela Acevedo prior to the contest.
An incredibly young team with a bright future, Queens finishes off the season at 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the ECC, while STAC moved to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Fittingly, Walker opened up Senior Day with the first goal of the game on a free position shot. The Knights then took a 2-0 lead 2:15 into the contest, as junior Mary Pat Gibble found sophomore Patriece Ausili for the tally. The Spartans got on the board 4:20 in to cut the lead to one, but sophomore Lauren Gentile scored shortly after to put the Knights back up by a pair, 3-1.
STAC tallied the next two goals, tying the game up at three all with 15:39 left until halftime. Just 43 seconds later, Ausili answered once again for Queens, scoring her second goal for her ninth multi-goal game of the season to give Queens a 4-3 lead. However, the Spartans scored three straight goals in four minutes to take a 6-4 lead with 10:45 left until the break. Sophomore Margaret Iavarone came through with a key goal in the final minute of the half to bring the Knights within one with 38 seconds until halftime, 6-5.
The Spartans quickly scored to open the second half on a free position shot by Caroline Finnen, and then pushed the lead to three with a goal at the 23:37 mark. Gibble brought the Knights back within two with a goal with 21:33 left on the clock, bringing the score to 8-6. From there on out, however, it was all STAC. The Spartans ended the game on a 6-0 run, highlighted by three straight goals from Alyson Brennan, to wrap up the victory.
Ausili finishes off an impressive sophomore campaign with a team-high 34 goals, and Gibble caps the season with 30 points on 14 goals and 16 assists. The Knights went 3-3 over their final six games.
