SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Queens College women's lacrosse team opened its 2017 season on the road against American International College on Sunday, falling to the Yellow Jackets by a final score of 17-5. Junior Nicole Moniello scored three goals in her debut for the Knights.
AIC didn't waste any time getting on the board first with two quick goals over the first two minutes. Moniello kept Queens alive with the Knights' first goal on an assist from senior Alyssa Walker to cut the deficit to just one, 2-1, 5:49 into the game. The Yellow Jackets then went off for six straight goals, however, over the next eight minutes to extend their lead to 8-1.
Junior Mary Pat Gibble pulled the Knights within six with her first goal of the season with 12:37 until halftime, but the Yellow Jackets responded with five more goals to head into the break with a commanding 13-2 lead.
Moniello got things going with the first goal of the second half just 1:11 in to make it 13-3. AIC would then score the next four goals to take a 14-goal lead with 10:50 remaining. Queens tallied the final two goals of the game, as Walker found the back of the net, and Moniello completed the hat trick with her third goal with 2:31 to play.
The Knights will look to bounce back on Wednesday, March 8, when they host Caldwell University in the home opener at 3 p.m.
