Worcester, Mass. - The Queens College lacrosse team opened its 2014 campaign with an 18-3 loss against Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Taylor Martello, Carly Chierico and Alyssa McCormick scored goals for the Knights.
Head coach Todd Kaiser has a thin roster to work with having just 14 players, and on Saturday the team got off to a slow start before playing a better second half in the loss to the Greyhounds.
Assumption scored the first nine goals in just over eight minutes before QC got on the board when sophomore midfielder Carly Chierico found the back of the net on an unassisted marker. The Greyhounds scored five more times before 50-goal scorer from a year ago, Taylor Martello, earned her first goal of the season just before halftime.
The second half saw the Knights tighten up on defense, allowing just four goals, while junior transfer, Alyssa McCormick, recorded the first marker of her QC career. 2013 All-ECC goalie, Kahli Evans, made seven saves in the contest.
The team returns to action on Saturday, March 8, when they open up East Coast Conference play against UDC at home. The opening draw is slated for noon.
