FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 16, 2017) – Beth Bonin scored 24 points and Taliyah Hopkins had 22 points---including six in the overtime period---as the Queens College women's basketball team fought back from a double-digit deficit to knock off Franklin Pierce on Saturday (Dec. 16) by a final score of 73-66 in overtime at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
A back-and-forth first quarter culminated with Queens (5-4) leading by a 17-16 margin against the Ravens. The Knights were ahead 6-3 thanks to baskets by Bonin and Marina Ramon Lopez, but Demi Akins hit a three-pointer to get Franklin Pierce (4-8) back even at 6-all midway through the opening frame. Merrick Rowland hit a three-pointer to give QC the lead once again, and the teams continued to trade buckets the rest of the way. Bonin hit a three-ball to put Queens up 17-14 late in the frame but Claudia Tucci beat the buzzer with a bucket to end the period.
The Ravens used that bucket as a catalyst, as Franklin Pierce started the second period on a 16-2 run in the first seven minutes of play. Diondra Woumn did much of the damage for the visitors, scoring 12 points while hitting all five of her field goal attempts in the period including two at the tail end of the run to get Franklin Pierce ahead by a 32-19 advantage. Bonin would score seven of QC's next nine points, including a three-pointer that brought the Knights within a halftime deficit of eight points at 36-28.
The second-half comeback began taking shape in the third quarter, despite the Knights ending three periods of play trailing 49-41. Queens got as close as a four-point deficit in the frame, but it would take another ten minutes for the action to get much closer and draw to its dramatic conclusion. With the Knights down 51-43, Hopkins knocked down a jumper which was followed by a Bonin three-pointer to bring Queens within five points at 53-48. Then at the midway point of the fourth quarter, Nalae Crosland scored on a jump shot to get the Knights within three points. A Hopkins three-point play tied the score with under four minutes remaining in regulation; the teams then traded free throws and points as the fourth quarter ended with the score tied at 56.
The "Taliyah Takeover" soon began in earnest as Hopkins scored the first six points of the overtime period, all on free throws. Jemma Thacker answered with a three-pointer to bring Franklin Pierce within a 62-59 margin midway through the overtime period, but Ramon Lopez put QC further ahead with free throws. Late in the overtime period, Crosland knocked down an elbow jumper to put the Knights up by five at 68-63. A last-ditch three-pointer by Thacker was off the mark and the Knights ended the contest with points on the free throw line to silence their foes from the Northeast-10.
Bonin had three steals and three rebounds to go along with her game-high 24 points while Hopkins had her career-high off the bench and hit 8-of-11 from the free throw line in the win. Ramon Lopez added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench as Merrick Rowland had five points and five boards. Woumn led Franklin Pierce with 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Mya Mosley added 14 and Thacker collected 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Knights are back in action on Dec. 30 when QC hosts UDC at Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
