Women's Basketball Soars Past Mercy in Conference Play

FLUSHING, N.Y. - On Wednesday evening, led by a game-high 25 points from senior Madison Rowland, the No. 16  Queens College women's basketball team sailed Mercy College in East Coast Conference action 82-54. With the win, The Knights improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in ECC action, while the Mavericks moved to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The Knights came out red hot in the first quarter posting a season-high 27 points on 6-12 shooting from long range. Cynthia Perez scored the opening bucket of the game to hand the Mavericks a 2-0 lead 47 seconds into the first quarter. The Knights responded with a three from junior Merrick Rowland to take a 3-2 lead and never looked back. QC jumped out to a quick 16-6 lead with 3:10 remaining. The Knights closed out the quarter with an 11-2 run holding the Mavericks to just eight points on 14.3% shooting. The Mavericks responded in the second quarter as they tried to cut into the deficit by outscoring Knights 24-19 but still trailed by 14.

QC kept the same tempo up in the third quarter as the Knights increased the lead to 20 points by the end of the third leading 67-47. The Mavericks never recovered from their disastrous shooting in the first quarter as QC never looked back for the remainder of the game to stay unbeaten in conference action with a comprehensively 82-54 win. 

QC shot 44.2% from the field while holding Mercy to 28.1%. The Knights forced 16 turnovers and turned them into 19 points. Mad. Rowland poured in another double-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Senior Mackenzie Rowland continued her terrific form with a double-double, posting 12 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Freshmen Beth Bonin scored nine points shooting 3-9 from long range with season-high six assists. Off the bench, sophomore Emer Moloney scored 10 points. 

The Mavericks were paced by Perez's 11 points and five rebounds. Off the bench, Latisha Clark posted 10 points shooting 5-8 from the field. 

UP NEXT: The Knights continue conference action Saturday, Dec. 3 as QC travels to Old Westbury, N.Y. to play the Bears of NYIT with tipoff slated for 1:00 pm.
