WBB Suffers First Setback Of The Season To Assumption

WORCESTER, MA - Despite a fourth quarter rally led by senior Madison Rowland's 12 points, the Queens College women's basketball team were unable to overcome a slow start and fell to Assumption 67-59 in non-conference action.  It marked the Knights' first loss of the year, while Assumption moved to 1-3.

Mad. Rowland scored the opening bucket with 10 seconds gone in the first quarter. The Greyhounds answered with an 8-0 run to take a 13-4 lead forcing a Knights timeout. QC answered back with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to two, 13-11, with 4:28 left in the first stanza. The Greyhounds fired back with a barrage of threes to take a 22-17 lead into the second quarter.

The Greyhounds scored 11 unanswered points to take a 33-17 lead forcing another QC timeout with 6:26 left in the second quarter. A layup by junior Melissa Fumano stopped the bleeding as the Knights looked to answer back. A layup by senior MacKenzie Rowland cut the deficit down to 10, 38-28, with 2:03 left in the second quarter. Neither team was able to muster any offensive for the remaining minutes of the quarter.

The third quarter plagued as the Knights dealt with foul trouble while the Greyhounds poured it on in a 20 point quarter to take a 58-39 lead.

QC attempted their comeback with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit down to five, 62-57, with 1:24 remaining in the game. It was short lived as AC hit its free throws down the stretch to pull away. Despite outscoring the Greyhounds 20-9 in the fourth quarter, the deficit created in the third quarter proved to be too much as QC suffered its first defeat of the season. 

QC shot 38.2% from the floor, while AC shot 44.2%. Mad. Rowland led the Knights with a season-high 32 points, 10 rebounds, and seven steals. Mac. Rowland posted eight points and eight rebounds.

Jo Impellizeri led the Greyhounds with 14 points, four assists, while Allison Stoddard posted 13 points and shot 3-for-5 FG from long range. 

UP NEXT: The Knights return to East Coast Conference action Wednesday as they host the Mavericks of Mercy College with tipoff slated for 5:30 pm.​
