Season Ends for Men's Tennis in NCAA Round of 16 Defeat to Drury

SURPRISE, Ariz. (May 9, 2018) - The Queens College men's tennis team was unable to exorcise the demons from a year ago as the Knights were eliminated from NCAA Tournament play in a 5-1 loss to No. 21 Drury on Wednesday (May 9) in Surprise, Ariz.

The Knights' season ends with the team posting a 20-6 record overall with ECC Tournament and NCAA East Region II championship crowns to celebrate the accomplishments in 2018.

Drury went ahead by a 3-0 score after sweeping the Knights in doubles play. At the top tandem of competition, QC's Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez were bested in an 8-4 match to the Panthers' Sebastian Amato and Leonardo Cerri. The 8-4 score was the final result in the third-doubles match as well with the Knights' Roman Laga and Jose Zurro falling to Augustin Diot and Paul Porcher. Cosme Jubera and Richard Sec were defeated at second-doubles by an 8-2 score at the hands of Nico Hadeler and Lukas Stierling.

The Knights' point came in singles play as the squad forced Drury to win two out of three finished matches on the afternoon. Porcher defeated Martinez at fifth singles by a 6-0, 6-2 margin, however Zurro won by a reverse score of 6-2, 6-0 at sixth singles over Cerri to put Queens on the scoreboard. At third singles, however, Diot claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Laga to clinch the Panthers' spot in the quarterfinals.

Mendez and Hadeler were in a first-set tiebreak at the conclusion of the match at the top flight of singles play. Jubera was down 4-6, 1-2 in second-singles to Amato but Sec held a 6-4, 3-2 lead over Stierling at the fourth-flight before the match was conceded.
