ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Queens College men's tennis team won the East Coast Conference (ECC) regular season championship with Saturday's emphatic 8-1 victory over the Robert Wesleyan Redhawks. The Knights finished conference play 5-0, wrapping up their first undefeated conference schedule since the 2011-12 season.
The Knights were impressive in the first two matches of doubles play. The A-pairing of senior Sharvill Nawghre and junior Roman Laga defeated the Redhawks in the top flight, 8-4, before sophomore Cosme Jubera and junior Jui Mao teamed up to take the No. 2 match, 8-3. Queens dropped a point in third doubles but still held a comfortable 2-1 advantage heading into singles.
Nawghre met up with the Roberts' Hugo Ball-Greene in No. 1 singles and dispatched the Redhawks' top junior in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Jui Mao followed suit with a close two-set victory over reigning ECC-Freshman of the Week Paul Langbroek, 6-4, 7-5. Gabriel Mendez, Lucas Martinez, and Richard Sec all recorded comfortable straight-set victories in the next three flights of singles play, leaving Federico Toscano a chance to punctuate a team sweep. Which, the senior from Buenos Aires, Argentina, did by winning a tiebreak: 6-3, 6-7, 10-6.
With Saturday's win, Queens will enter next weekend's East Coast Conference Championship as the regular season champions, the top-ranked team in the NCAA East Regional Rankings, and the No. 47 ranked team in the Oracle/ITA National Rankings. The Knights will host the two-round tournament April 21-22.
