QC Men's Basketball Tops Roberts Wesleyan In ECC Opener

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College men's basketball team captured a 93-87 victory over Roberts Wesleyan in its East Coast Conference opener Wednesday evening at FitzGerald Gymnasium.  Senior Tyree White led the Knights with 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in the contest.

All five starters scored in double figures, including senior Diego Maldonado who collected 15 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman Issac Grant scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Junior Simon Green posted 12 points as did senior Kyheim Chaplin, who also finished with seven boards and six assists.  Senior Marquis Roberts registered 11 points off the bench.

The Redhawks hit on three more field goals in the game than Queens but were outdone from behind the arc as the Knights connected on 12 three-pointers.

The Knights led by as much as 11 in the opening half, grabbing a 16-5 lead with 16:16 left.  RWC responded with a run of their own, taking a 23-19 advantage with 10:05 remaining.  Trailing by two, a pair of free throws by senior Marquis Roberts evened the contest at 39 at the half.

Trailing 68-64 in the second period, a 16-6 charge by the Knights gave QC the lead for good.  Senior Idrissa Gandega scored six of his career-high nine points during the run, sparking the Knights off the bench.  QC sealed the win on a three by Green with 1:15 left in the contest.

Manny Joseph and Malik Dare paced Roberts Wesleyan with 19 points apiece.  The Knights are back in action Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 pm tip at Holy Family.
