Men's Hoops Opens Season With Overtime Victory Over Assumption

WORCESTER, MA - Senior Kyheim Chaplin scored a career-high 27 points in the Queens College men's basketball team's 93-87 overtime victory over Assumption Friday evening in the team's season opener.

The entire starting five for the Knights registered double-digit scoring as the Knights shot 49.3% from the field in the contest.  Chaplin posted his 27 points on 10-19 shooting and knocked down five three-pointers.  Senior Tyree White scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.  QC grabbed 16 offensive rebounds in the contest, which turned into 21 second-chance points.

Freshman Issac Grant scored 21 points in his collegiate debut, as the post player connected on nine field goals and also contributed eight boards.  Junior Simon Green scored 12 points and dished out four assists, while senior Diego Maldonado scored 10 points.

The Knights led by as much as 10 points in the opening half.  The host Greyhounds closed the period on a 14-4 run as the two teams headed to the locker room knotted at 42.

Queens led for the majority of the second half.  Assumption erased a seven-point deficit over the final 6:30 and forced overtime with a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining.

In overtime, the Knights trailed 87-83 with 2:31 remaining.  A three-point play by Chaplin cut the deficit to one before Grant gave QC the lead with a layup.  From there, the Knights closed out the game with free throws from White and Maldonado.

Damien Rance scored a game-high 30 points for Assumption.  The Knights are back in action Saturday against Stonehill (4:00 pm).
